Description: If you've never heard these little fighters in the air before, or even if you've heard one, nothing came prepare you for the awesome sound that is FOUR Polikarpov I-16's at the same time. Turn this one up loud, and if possible feed it through a stereo system with a good amp -- you'll be pleased you did. This short video shows four WW2, Soviet-built, I-16 'Rata' fighters at Warbirds Over Wanaka (New Zealand) in 1998. At the start of the war these fighters were the cream of the Russian Air Forces, and they had served with distinction in the Spanish Civil War. By the time Germany invaded Russia, the aircraft were beyond their best-before date, but they never-the-less put up an impressive fight against the German invaders. This video is a short, essentially unedited clip from our recently acquired archive of raw video footage from many early Warbirds Over Wanaka shows.
