I’m Madeleine Harvey and thank you so much for joining me for today’s video. The whole purpose of this video is to demystify the creative process for you so that you can begin to put the necessary pieces in place in order to support a joyful, worthwhile artistic journey. This will give you all the tools you need to succeed as a singer, or to succeed as a musician. Today, we’re going to engage in a supportive conversation all about self-empowerment. In this video we’re going to talk about the 3 traits that you will need to become successful in any career, but more specifically should you choose to go breaking into the music industry. My main goal here is to remind you to become the Self empowered artist that you already are! Before we discuss the traits that you will absolutely need to support your journey, let’s talk about the 3 things you may think you need, but you absolutely DO NOT. 1. Passion Don’t get me wrong; I’m an extremely passionate person. I tackle every project I do with the kind of vigor that can only come from the feeling that my hair is on fire. But not everyday. I used to buy into the preaching of passion as the ultimate ingredient to a life of purpose and fulfillment. Until one day, my passion decided to go on vacation. Seriously…it was gone. And I found myself restless, disinterested and totally freaked out. I didn’t have purpose without passion. I didn’t have clarity and direction without my passion leading the way. And very soon after that, I found myself binge watching Netflix in my pg.’s at 3 in the afternoon wondering where my life was going, spiraling into visions of doomsday scenarios of what my life would be like if my passion decided to never come back. And do you know what I created in that time? Nothing. I was waiting on the permission of my passion. Passion may get you started. But it certainly won’t keep you going. 2. Perfection. (Suit story) There once was a made who went to a tailor and tried on a suit. As he stood before the mirror, he noticed the vest was a little uneven at the bottom. “Oh” said the tailor. “Don’t worry about that. Just hold the shorter end down with your left hand and no one will ever notice.” While the man proceeded to do this, he noticed that the lapel of his jacket curled up instead of laying flat. “Oh that” said the tailor. “That’s nothing. Jus turn your head a little and hold it down with your chin.” The man complied, and as he did, he noticed that the inseam of his pants was a little short and felt the rise was a bit too tight. “Oh! That’s a really easy fix.” Said the tailor. “Just pull the inseam down with your right hand, and everything will lay perfectly.” The man did as the tailor told him and purchased the suit. the next day, he wore his new suit with all the accompanying hand and chin alternations. As he limped through the park with his chin holding down his lapel, one hand tugging at the vest, the other hand grasping his crotch, two older men stopped playing checkers to watch him stagger by. "Oh My gracious!” said the first man, “Look at that poor crippled man!” The second man nodded and reflected a bit, but then said, “Yes, the crippling is really too bad. But I wonder, where did he get such a nice suit!” I really liked this story when talking about the concept of perfection as it relates to working creatively. The reaction of the last man in this story exemplifies a common cultural response toward a person that has developed an impeccable person, but who is all crippled up on the inside trying to maintain it. I’ve seen this happen time and time again with singers. They try and they try to live up to the prepackaged sound that everyone says a good singer “should” have. Once they achieve it, it feels great for a while. But sooner or later, they limp and they limp feeling stuck in a voice that is not their own. And worse, they have no idea of the raw, authentic awesomeness that lives inside of them because they were too busy tugging at their crotch trying to get that perfect fit. If you employ the aspects of Curiosity, courage and commitment into your creativity. You will succeed in the music industry!
