Description: *WATCH IN 4K WITH HEADPHONES IN A DARK ROOM FOR THE BEST VIEWING EXPERIENCE* Filmed within the month of June 2021. GIBSON is an experimental short film that provides a glimpse of life on a hot summer day outside of “the strip” in Las Vegas. What inspired me to make this was a daydream I had. So my initial idea was to convey a “vivid daydream expressing itself”. But now that I have a finished product. GIBSON is truly more of a feeling than a film. I wanted to explore the feelings of stagnancy, isolation, escapism, hopelessness, angst, yearning, and complacency. Moving from the stimulating lively east coast to the quiet suburbs of Henderson at a young age, I felt as if these Henderson suburbs and other residential, local parts of Vegas outside of the strip, provided a feeling of disconnect and alienation from the city's center and hub of adult attraction. Making where I live, feel like a different world, even though the strip not even being 15 minutes away from my house. Henderson always felt more like a small town to me than a city, and there was a time when it was less populated and more mellow, suiting that vibe. Partially growing up in Vegas, but spending most of my time traveling or in California, I would dread being in Vegas when I was younger. Because it isn’t a hotspot for art, artists, or has some deep-rooted rich diverse culture. I mean, it’s the desert what do you expect. Plus, most of my friends don't live here. I did find, however, over time, that it harbors a melancholy beauty that comes from stagnancy and isolation. Something that I have grown to love and appreciate. This film provides a detailed examination of the domino effect of energy interacting and translating into its environment, affecting it as a whole. Each thought, feeling, or action of a person, having omnipresence, mindlessly and coincidentally connecting to its surroundings, and the thoughts, feelings, actions of others. Showing how lonely Vegas can be, yet connected. I wanted to show different ways of how one may escape the stillness of the desert. Some resort to substance, some to their phone or media, and others to social interaction. Inspired by the transformation of those in my life, and the Vegas residents whom I grew up with trying to find the balance and good in their personal misfortunes. Either escaping the comfort of their stagnant lives or succumbing, getting swallowed by the desert. Still and complacent like their environment. The importance of sound in the film is ESSENTIAL. GIBSON being a visual piece about a mellow, un-stimulating desert environment, NEEDED sound to bring it to life. I had very specific sounds in mind for each shot that are native to Vegas and couldn’t be replicated or even found with sound effects in post-editing. So almost every sound you hear was individually captured with a field recorder by myself during and mostly after the production. From air conditioning blowing recklessly, providing sanctuary and security for the inhabitants from the extreme heat. Cicadas hissing and communicating, just like the man-made power lines humming, carrying, and transmitting messages, conversations, and human language throughout them. Crickets chirping, gas station conversations, birds squalling. While many may overlook the sound effects as standard, what you are hearing are authentic and local sounds sourced from Vegas. Which was crucial in conveying the feeling of GIBSON.
