I spent 24 hours living with one of the last shamans of the Bribri tribe in Costa Rica, Marcelino Figueroa Lopez. In Bribri, they do not use the word “shaman” to describe Marcelino. He holds the permission of three sacred titles in Bribri, an áwà, bakáklä, and ökòl. Each holds different types of wisdom such as connecting with spirits, medicinal use of plants, and the ability to lead sacred ceremonies. Now 68, Marcelino started his training at eight years old and went through the traditional process of being initiated into these roles, which takes at least 15 years. In the 1500s Costa Rica was colonized by the Spanish. More than 500 years later, colonialism has caused lasting environmental, cultural, and economic challenges for the Bribri, and Costa Rica’s eight other indigenous communities. As a result, this wisdom is in jeopardy of being wiped out completely. So when I had the opportunity to spend 24 hours with Marcelino, I was honored to accept this invitation. It all started when I was at Punta Mona, a permaculture farm in Costa Rica near Bribri land. I was making a video about the traveling circus group Momentom and it was here that I met two incredible humans, Captain Pat & Hava. Captain Pat & Hava are the founders of The Found Nation and explained they were working closely with Marcelino to spearhead a new project that would contribute to preserving the wisdom of the Bribri, the building of what’s called an Uzüle, a cosmic temple used for education and ceremony. Captain Pat & Hava invited me to join them on the journey to Marcelino’s, to meet this Shaman and learn from his way of life.
