STORYLINE: Many in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad went to mosques on Monday to perform prayers that mark the beginning of the Eid al-Fitr holiday. They joined Muslims across the Middle East and beyond celebrating the end of the Islamic holy fasting month of Ramadan. Eid al-Fitr is one of the most celebrated holidays in the Muslim world and traditionally a time for family and festivities. Fasting in the holy month of Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam and considered a time of worship and contemplation. Eid festivities last for three days and include time for family gatherings and the exchanging of gifts. This year the holiday comes amid an improved security situation in Baghdad and across the country. Iraqi police could be seen searching worshippers arriving for dawn prayers at the entrance of the Abdul-Qadir Gilani Mosque in the capital's central area. The holiday begins on the first day of the month of Shawal, the tenth month of the lunar Islamic calendar. There are, however, regional differences in the exact timing of Eid due to different interpretations of the calendar and variations in religious opinion.
