Description: This track, "Echo Chamber", has a pretty interesting backstory! It's a track from Thomas Giles new solo EP (singer of BTBAM, for anyone who didn't already know), 'Feel Nothing' (links below to check out the whole thing!). At any rate (!) - a long while back now, Tommy hit me up with an idea for writing some new music. The idea was that we'd sort of right 'backwards' - I'd program / write a bunch of random drum ideas, in a structure of sorts, with no idea of what music would go on top of it. Then, he'd write guitar / vocal parts *around* the pre-existing drum parts. The only direction I had was to sort of make it blast beat-y / extreme-metal-ish. I thought it was a rad idea - a fun way to write a bit differently, that could potentially / hopefully spark some interesting ideas. I've since done this with a few other people, too (in fact, the track "The Ones That Made Us" from the latest Whitechapel album was written this way - I wrote the drums first, & Alex Wade wrote some riffs around it!). For this song, Tommy ended up chopping up / moving some of what I wrote around a bit (i.e., this structure isn't exactly what I originally wrote). But the drum parts themselves remained totally the same - I wrote all of them without hearing any other instrumentation. Originally, we were gonna try to make a full-blown side-project out of it. But shortly thereafter, both of us got busy with other stuff, & the idea got put on the back burner. I had already tracked the drums for this song though (as well as recorded this video), so it kind of sat for a while. Truth be told, I sort of forgot about it (this was roughly two years ago now). Eventually, Tommy asked if I'd be down with him using it as a track for his next solo EP instead, to which I said somethin' along the lines of "Doode HEK yeah, for sure!" (LOL). I was just glad for the drums to be used, & had a lot of fun writing music this way. Overall, I'm not sure writing this way would *always* be the most practical. BUT, it's definitely a lot of fun, & a good way to change things up / spark some different ideas. I def recommend it to some of you drummers out there - if you're in a band, & the other members are having a hard time writing new material, try writing / programming some drum ideas in a structure. Come up with a basic song structure in your head, & then write drum parts with that in mind. Have some parts repeat, perhaps with slight variations, & then just send it to your bandmates. Might make for a rad song in the end! So anywayz - that's the story of how this song came to be! Then of course Jake from Plini came in & ripped a SUPER sick solo at the end (which RULES). So yeah - was a fun project to work on, & big love to Tommy for thinking of me & wanting to try it out!
