The Crew: The Quest for Planet Nine This take the basic game of Hearts or Whist but gets you to work together to ensure a particular player wins specific combinations of cards. It’s simple and really well themed around space exploration. Players can’t communicate directly about what cards they have, but there is a nice hint system where they can give clues to each other. The Last Defence This is a co-operative board game from Funko Games that uses integrated audio from an app to drive high action and evolving play around trying to save a city from alien invasion. It’s bright, well designed and the audio adds both excitement and time-bound elements. Mystery House This is an escape room style challenge. It revolves around a central room constructed in a box by inserting cards. As you peer into the structure you spot clues and check with an app to gain items and unlock doors. It’s cleverly designed to get you twisting and turning the board around to see into different parts of the rooms. The app keeps track of everything for you so you can focus on the clue solving. Mass Transit This is a card-laying game where you are placing transportation cards to get workers from the central city to six of the destinations. Players can’t communicate about their cards but need to work together to lay cards efficiently. Each card can either lay new transport tracks or to move a particular meeple forward along a specific type of transportation. It’s well balanced to make the challenge considerable while keeping things enjoyable. 3D Settlers of Catan This was unveiled as upcoming at Toy Fair. Seeing the Catan board laid out in 3D really did add a sense of location to the gameplay. The detail of the board was impressive and combined with 3D playing pieces. The board is designed to celebrate Catan’s 25th aniversary. Miyabi This is a tile laying game where you each construct a Japanese garden. You are restricted on where you can lay tiles each game and must carefully consider how to get the best value from your resources. A little bit like Kingdomino, but with a vertical building aspect that extends the strategy in a new dimension. It looks beautiful and requires players to develop deep tactics. StarLink This is a drawing party game where you are tasks with drawing items on cards. However, you can only creat drawings by connecting one star to another. This means all the drawings must be with straight lines. It’s a neat challenge. If you manage to create a drawing small enough to fit in the telescope frame you get extra points. Animix You position cards on a grid in the middle of the table. You then use the cards in your hand to try and win a specific type of animal. Each type of animal then scores differently based on position. As you play there’s a risk-vs-reward of should you lay cards in the middle to adjust the scoring, or should you play them in front of you to increase the likelihood of winning a particular type.
