Description: Spinifex is a 9 week old Black Flying-Fox who was noticed on the ground under a tree in an inner city suburb. The lovely MOPs (members of public) waited around until I arrived to protect her from the local dogs; the also found an old chair to keep the rain off her. 9 weeks old is very young for this time of the year, meaning she was conceived at the around September last year rather than during the normal mating season from March to May. She was quite outraged at the situation in which she found herself, being kidnapped by a furless giant, and pretty much everything about how she has been treated. She's a snappy spiky little girl so I called her Spinifex, which has a lot of spiky bits. I think she was probably an early flyer; the colony is about 1 km away from the rescue site, which is in range for a new flyer, whose maiden flight didn't really go quite as well as anticipated. I have to say I have hopes of her having a somewhat better temper in the morning, because she's still a little touchy about everything. As I write this, she's ensconced in my incubator, snatching at the occasional grape, and resting. In the morning I'll try her on yoghurt and/or milk, and see if she's too big a girl to feed from a bottle. Then Jo, who has a 7 week Grey baby, Diego, at the moment, will take Spinifex as his buddy. Update: her temper has marginally improved this morning in the she's not snapping at me all the time but she is throwing tanties (tantrums) in between stuffing her face with grapes. I tried to make her perch more comfortable so she tried to bite and slash me, and now she's hanging up the "unimproved" end of the coat hanger in the dressing gown.
