Description: This is the third lecture we are showing from Derek Moulton's first-year Geometry course. In this video, Derek discuss the idea of the shortest path between two points on a surface. Such paths follow a curve known as a geodesic. He works through some basic calculations and aims to build intuition for this important concept. Course materials here: people.maths.ox.ac.uk/moulton/teaching.html You can watch many other student lectures via our main Student Lectures playlist (also check out specific student lectures playlists): youtube.com/playlist?list=PL4d5ZtfQonW0A4VHeiY0gSkX1QEraaacE All first and second year lectures are followed by tutorials where students meet their tutor to go through the lecture and associated problem sheet and to talk and think more about the maths. Third and fourth year lectures are followed by classes.
