Margaret wrote to me: “Dear Per-Olov, I was doing my usual hour or so wandering through your music and I noticed that you explain the silences in your playing to your musically well-educated audience. I use this all the time when giving talks on my books e.g. for the end of my childhood memoir, as we are leaving, I describe the quick post-war return of Shanghai to its commercial roots and say: “And engrossed in its own affairs, Shanghai, the love of my life, the place of my birth (pause) turned its back. (longer pause) On the wharf, a dead seagull, its wing lifted by fitful gusts of wind, waved goodbye.” (silence, end of talk).
