Right initial reports said the attacked was charged with assault, but that is no longer the case. With LA County’s District Attorney’s Office announcing yesterday that they declined to file felony charges and instead hit him with four misdemeanor charges. Because the weapon was not used and Chappelle did not get hurt, the office apparently determined that felony assault charges were not warranted. There are also some more details about the attacker, Isaiah Lee, with his brother telling Rolling Stone that Lee has been dealing with homelessness and mental illness. Chappelle also spoke about Lee at a secret stand-up show in Los Angeles last night, according to the Hollywood Reporter. With Chappelle claiming he convinced the LAPD to allow him to see Lee and ask what prompted the attack, And further saying that Lee appeared ill and told a story about his grandmother in Brooklyn who had been forced out of his neighborhood by gentrification and the attack was meant to draw attention to her plight.
