Earlier this week the world lost one of its great heroes, PS56's beloved principal (and PS22's former assistant principal), Phil Carollo. Phil was more than just an educator - he was a motivator, a celebrater, and an endless source of positivity. The man was just a loveable mensch. He had that unique gift of making you feel special and appreciated, young or old. His loss has left us grief-stricken for his wife and kids, for his family, for his school, and for ourselves. Personally speaking, he was a big supporter of the PS22 Chorus and accompanied us on some of our most memorable trips, such as President Obama's inauguration, the Tribeca Film Festival performance with The Bangles, the Yankees homecoming dinner, and many more. But even more importantly, he was always there for me when I went to him for help or was stressing... he had a way of calming you down and making you feel better and cared about. What more can we really ask of anybody? We want to dedicate this never-before-seen performance of "In The Embers" by Sleeping At Last to Mr Carollo. This is one of my favorite songs the chorus has ever sung, and it just seemed right to have his tribute be sung by the children who knew and loved him while he was assistant principal at PS22. We who understand the magnitude of the loss will try to remember in the midst of our pain to remain grateful for the love, help, inspiration and joyful memories he's given us all. May those memories keep him with us always and ease the pain of having to say goodbye in this untimely way. Love and miss you, Phil.
