Description: We never hear Rumi speaking of a spiritual teacher and student relationship with his spiritual instructor Shams Tabrizi, says Rupert, when a man asks about their relationship. Instead, we we hear him talking of his friend. There is no hierarchy in their relationship. It is a deep friendship based on mutual respect and love. Rupert suggests this is a new model for contemporary spirituality. That instead of viewing it is as a spiritual teacher and student relationship, it is rather a beautiful, mutually-respectful friendship. People sharing their love of truth, love of beauty and love of love with each other. This friendship has a unique, magical quality to it because it is not sourced in form, nor in the content of our minds. It comes from a much deeper place, that Rumi expresses in various ways, such as the field beyond right and wrong, the heart, or the beloved.
