Interestingly, there were rumors that Manfredy had injured his ribcage about 3.5 weeks into training camp. Prefight records; Manfredy 22(18)-2-1, Gatti 29(24)-1. Entering the fight, 26 year old Arturo and 23 year old Angel shared notable wins over Calvin Grove & Wilson Rodriguez. In the opening round, both fighters had successes upstairs and downstairs but with about 15 seconds left to the bell a counter right by Angel opened up a cut below Arturo’s left eyebrow. For the first half of round 3, exchanges were pretty even but Manfredy floored Gatti with a thunderous left hook during one of the sequences to score the first (and only) knockdown of the fight. In rounds 4 & 5, Arturo unleashed vicious body attacks and landed pinpoint head shots on Angel who came back well in round 6 as he connected at at near equal terms with his Italy born opponent. However, Manfredy had hurt his right hand as his cutman was head telling him he wasn’t sure if it had broke but advised him to utilize his left instead. Oppositely, Gatti’s cut was worsening due to the furious pace throughout 18 minutes. Early in round 7, the gash was opened up with a right hand by Angel who followed up with a barrage targeting the injury but Arturo was somehow able to return fire during the midway point in his vintage style although evidently bothered. Going into round 8, Gatti’s vision was already badly hindered thus Manfredy continued to capitalize on the bad eye with slick shots whilst going on his toes against the hometown favorite who displayed incomparable courage by retaliating valiantly despite taking too many punches. With about 15 seconds left to the bell, referee Wayne Hedgpeth instructed Arturo Gatti to go to the corner for an inspection by the ringside physician as blood was flowing into his left eye like a leaky pipe. Before a proper evaluation was conducted, his trainer Hector Roca threw in the towel to save his fighter from unnecessary punishment. At the time of the stoppage, Angel Manfredy was ahead in 2 of the scorecards with 1 even at 68-65, 67-65 & 66-66. The late Harold Lederman scored it 66-66 just like judge Henry Grant. Hope you guys enjoy this highlight of an exciting fight, and remember to SUBSCRIBE! Take care and keep your punches up.
