Most of the work actually involves clay, and I definitely recommend a light paper clay which won't sink into the slime. I used the one from Banggood.com and I was very impressed by the quality vs cost. It comes in a much larger container than most clays AND you don't have to use it up as quickly. The only downside is that it tends to dry quickly with a smooth "foamy" texture, so it becomes harder to sculpt details after a while.
