Description: In 1899, Edward Elgar conducted his Enigma Variations in Worcester Cathedral as part of the Three Choirs Festival. And we played it there again this week, to open the 2021 festival – though this film was made at the Royal Festival Hall back in April. The final variation represents Elgar himself – 'Edu' was his wife Alice's nickname for him. It incorporates melodies from earlier variations dedicated to Alice, and to Elgar's publisher and great friend Augustus Jaeger. The complete concert, conducted by Sir John Eliot Gardiner and also featuring music by Tippett and Britten, is available to watch on demand until 7 August, tickets £12: philharmonia.co.uk/watch-on-demand-elgars-enigma-variations
