For this video I will base the explanations on the Boeing 747 and its particular system. Now that you know that the Autobrake is a helpful system for the pilots, lets see how they can activate it and what settings and functions they can choose from. On Boeing models, the switch to activate the Autobrake selector. On the 747-400 it is located on the center control stand under the transponder panel and next to the first officersβ seat. On the 747-8 the same panel is located underneath the gear lever. But in both cases they have the same labeling for their various settings: βRTOβ, βOFFβ, βDISARMβ, AUTOBRAKE β1β, β2β, β3β, β4β and βMAX AUTOβ. First of all, lets have a look at the options you as a pilot have when coming in for a landing. Please note that the Autobrake alone does not affect thrust reversers or spoiler deployment. Its one and only objective is to trigger the wheel braking demanded by the pilots. The settings 1 to 4 and MAX AUTO, represent deceleration rates at which the system tries to slow down the aircraft. Whether the preset deceleration can be fully achieved depends on the runway and tire conditions. Now, during the descend the pilots will process their checklists and will come to the point βAutobrakeβ. In most cases this point reads βas requiredβ or simply βsetβ, meaning the pilots set the Autobrake to one of the specific settings in regard to runway length and runway condition. Once touching down, the wheel spin sensors sense the that the wheels have spun up and the Autobrake starts acting with minimum delay. Any manual braking will over ride this automated process and will disarm the Autobrake immediately. That is why you sometimes hear the pilot calling out βmanual brakingβ after rolling out flickling the selector automatically to theβDISARMβ setting. Yes you could disarm the autobrake system by placing the selector manually but pilots wouldnβt reach to the selector during roll-out, as this is not where eyes should be.
