Why? Well, my wife and I just had our second kid and, with the addition of that second kid, our main house is getting a little cramped for guests. Rather than move to a bigger house, since we love our neighborhood and our house, we decided building a small guest house in our backyard would both give our guests an awesome place to stay when they’re visiting, but it would also make for an awesome experience for me, building a house from scratch. In part 1, I’ll cover designing the tiny house, getting HOA approval and my building permit, and finally doing some site prep work to prepare for construction. Part 2, which will be published on December 11, will cover laying out the building using batter boards and string line, setting the string line to final grade.
