Description: A recent order passed by SEBI against a Research Analyst, Amit Jeswani, indirectly has the potential of being a doom-gloom situation for portfolio service companies such as Smallcase. According to this order, Sebi-registered research analysts cannot offer model portfolios or offer advisory services. Smallcase is a platform that offers portfolios to users that are created by RAs i.e. Research Analysts. This particular order in question observes that the aforementioned accused was selling model portfolio products to his clients which is against the defined responsibility of a Research Analyst as mentioned in RA Regulations and professional standards of Research Analyst. And this is not just about Smallcase, in fact, there are several such platforms and services in the market that offer similar services. And this cannot be ignored that stock tips shared on social media remain unregulated. Influential businesses offering a model portfolio are arguing that "within the legal definition of what a research analyst can do. The order imposes a massive 28.6 lakh rupees settlement amount and also a bar from applying for any licence for the next three years." In the past, it has been observed that SEBI has mostly praised Smallcase for its business structure and fundamental operations framework.
