You can choose which feels the most comfortable to you. Each method has its advantages I am teaching how to knit continental style, meaning that I hold and tension the yarn in my left hand. This method seems to work really work for right handed crocheters as they are already used to holding and tension the yarn in their left hand. One less thing tolerant.
