Description: Ovarian cancer is the fifth leading cause of death among women in the United States. It is the most DEADLY of the gynecological cancers. Ovarian Cancer is often referred to as the “silent killer” because it’s symptoms are common and often go unnoticed, or confused for something else. Signs: * Bloating * Pelvic or abdominal pain * Difficulty eating * Feeling full quickly * Urinary symptoms (urgency, frequency) Other symptoms of Ovarian Cancer can include: * Fatigue * Upset stomach or heartburn * Back pain * Pain during sex * Constipation or menstrual changes Risks: * Women at any age are at risk, however, risk increases with age. * Personal or family history of ovarian, breast, colon, rectal, or uterine cancer. * If you have NOT borne a child * Personal history of endometriosis * The most significant risk factor for ovarian cancer is an inherited genetic mutation in one of two genes: breast cancer gene 1 (BRCA 1) or breast cancer gene 2 (BRCA 2). These genes are responsible for about 10-15 % of all ovarian cancers. 1 out of 78 women will be diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer in her lifetime. A Pap smear test does NOT detect Ovarian Cancer. When diagnosed and treated in the early stages, 5 year survival rate is over 90%. Share this information with your family, friends, and loved ones. Awareness of these signs and symptoms is the greatest way to detect Ovarian Cancer at an earlier stage, and increase the survival rate. My mother wasn’t diagnosed until she was Stage 4, meaning the cancer had already spread throughout her body, and it was too late to save her.
