My wish is to provide free, high-quality and FUN ocean "edutainment" for anyone with access to a computer :) Let's learn about MANDARINFISH!! * Mandarin fish were named after their resemblance to the vivid robes worn by Imperial Chinese Mandarin officers. * These slow-moving fish feed on small crustaceans and invertebrates and are REALLY tiny: Growing to only 2 inches, or 6 centimeters with a lifespan of 10-15 years. * They use special light-reflecting cells called cyanophores to make their stunningly bright blue coloring! * They are native to the Pacific, ranging from the Ryukyu Islands to Australia. * They can “walk” on the seafloor using their large pelvic fins. * Males do a ritual-like dorsal dance to win the affections of a female! music * To spawn, a male and female slowly swim upward about three feet above the sea floor. At their peak, a cloud of eggs and sperm are released. * The mandarin fish does not have scales; instead it produces a stinky mucous that covers its body which tastes bitter, likely to ward off predators. * Mandarin fish really look like they popped out of a 1960’s psychedelic movie.
