Description: I wanted a small forge to get myself started in knifemaking, a torpedo mini keg was the perfect size & shape! I got a great deal on a 2.5 gallon mini keg and decided to turn it into a small forge. Eventually it'll just become a heat treating forge (once I inevitably build a larger forge), so I wanted to keep it as enclosed as possible to keep as much heat in as I could, hence no opening in the back. I powered the forge using two Bernzomatic MAPP gas torches (Two different models, a TS4000 and a TS8000) and they heat it up incredibly quickly. I can get a piece of flat stock glowing red in a minute or two, perfect for small knife making. Eventually I'll run the torches off of a a standard propane fuel source (MAPP gas is expensive!) and it should still heat up pretty quickly. The forge is lined with two 1" layers of kaowool and about 3/8" thick coating of refractory cement. I'm really not sure if this is ideal or not, but the forge has so far held up without the lining cracking and it retains the heat really well, so it's a good start for a forge that isn't being run hours on end. I may end up drilling it for another torch (not that I have a third Bernzomatic) just so that I have various configuration options. DISCLAIMER: Do not try this at home!
