Description: Big Big congratulations to Nas for his big big GRAMMY win. The Queens legend took home Best Rap Album for King’s Disease, which was released through his Mass Appeal imprint. This is God’s Son’s first Grammy award win despite being nominated 13 times prior, which feels like an odd statement considering the reverence his catalog has held within Hip Hop. The guy that created Illmatic and It Was Written and Life Is Good, until now, hasn’t won a GRAMMY? Word? In this week’s episode of What’s The Headline? Ambrosia For Heads’ Reggie Williams and Jake Paine did a great job contextualizing Nas’ win within the confines of Grammy Rap History. But this is one of the years where the Grammy’s Best Rap Album nominees felt correct to me. Along with Nas, D Smoke was nominated for Bad Habits. Freddie Gibbs and Alchemist’s Alfredo received a nom. Jay Electronica’s A Written Testimony And Royce 5’9’s The Allegory all received recognition from the Recording Academy. It doesn’t get more Hip Hop Hip Hop than that list of nominees. So in that sense, the Grammy’s got it right. But did Nas receive the award based on the merits of his most recent release? Was King’s Disease really Best Album worthy or was Nas’ career being honored more than this album? We discuss in this conversation.
