Description: This is an excerpt from the 177 hours of PDC and ATC video at pdcvid.com - That's me giving my "Animals in the Landscape" presentation! I start by detailing the 8 ways to measure a system for raising chickens. How much vegetation the chickens have access to, how many bugs the chickens have access to, how much chicken poop do I have to clean, how much poop do the chickens have to stand around in, how much work is required of me, how much access do chickens have to their natural habitat, how confined or caged are the chickens, and how much money is spent on chicken feed. This started as an article I wrote about 12 years ago in a feeble attempt to express my concerns over the ways that most people raised chickens. I needed to express that different systems have different up sides and down sides. Stuff about chicken predators will come later. All of the factors have a range of zero to ten. Zero is worst and ten is best. Start off exploring factory systems including "free range" with photos showing factory egg systems and factory meat systems. Then we take a look at coop and run. Most chicken runs have zero vegetation - although a few have some. Most chicken runs have nearly zero bugs. Lots of poop to be cleaned and the chickens are standing on a lot of poop. Coop and run builds disease and the concentration of poop makes your ground water more like poop koolaid. We see images of chicken runs devoid of greenery while there is greenery outside the fence. Picture from the bullock brothers and their chicken run experiment to grow greens for the chickens. Some people throw comfrey into a chicken run and the chickens go bonkers for it - so they think chickens love comfrey. But really, the chickens are super hungry for stuff other than the low grade food they have access to - they are hungry to eat damn near anything. If the chickens had access to a huge buffet of food, they would probably eat only a little comfrey.
