Description: Three Piece shower drain for pan liner explained, also known as a two stage drain. Tile showers will have some sort of system to manage water. A common one is a vinyl pan liner with a three piece drain. There are some important things to know about a three piece drain and how it works. I describe those in this video. The locking flange has a very important function besides clamping the liner in place. This piece of the drain has a series of holes, channels and groves to facilitate the drainage of any water that might get into the liner and must be protected so that they are not clogged by the deck mud when it is installed. To do this, either some pea stone gravel is placed around the drain, or a plastic weep hole protector can be used. Here I am just describing how the drain works, and not how to install it. The drain is only part of a whole system, for example a pre-slope must be installed under the liner and a sealant must be used between the vinyl liner and lower flange body.
