Description: Use good tweezers to grab as close to the skin and tick head as possible. Pull straight up and out. When pulling a tick out of a dog, don't twist or pull to the side. This is the right and proper way to do it. The head of the tick should completely come out of the skin or else it can cause infection. After pulling the tick out, clean the wound with rubbing alcohol. Smash the tick in a paper towel and kill it with fire. These tick buggers are resilient and hard to kill. First we smashed the tick in a paper towel. The blood inside the tick was black. Old blood. That was interesting. Then, when we started burning the tick, it seemed almost fire resistant. Then the tick's blood body pouch started to puff up again like a hot air balloon. It looked almost like a bean. Very interesting, educational and fascinating to me! We live in the Pacific Northwest, Washington. Captain, our rottweiler dog, had been staying on Vashon Island for the last week. Vashon is wooded and known to have ticks. Cappy is on flea and tick meds, but he was just about due for another dose when this tick hitched a ride home on him. By the time we spotted the tick on his belly it was very large, fat and full of Captain's blood. I've never seen such a big giant tick! It was so gross! We were able to pull the tick out of Cappy's skin using the method I described above. Steff did a great job of pulling that tick out.
