Description: From the time capsule - Early 1990s - In an attempt to improve math literacy among elementary students in the Boston Public Schools educators began experimenting with the use of Cuisenaire rods. The rods are learning aids that provide an active, hands-on way to explore mathematics and learn mathematical concepts, such as the four basic arithmetical operations, working with fractions and finding divisors. Reporter Marcus Jones observed how this teaching method was being implemented and then he talked with students, teachers and school administrators to gauge its impact.
